L. reclusa is not considered to be endemic to South Carolina. Only 44 brown recluse spiders have been documented in the state’s history. [1]
Counties where L. reclusa were found (6 out of 46) are shown on the map. The scarcity of specimens, the randomness of their occurrence, and the fact that all specimens were found in man-made structures suggests that the specimens collected had been introduced by human involvement and not by natural dispersion.
